This is a recording of the League of Women Voters recent presentation, The Fake News Marketplace: How It Works and Why It Matters. The term, "fake news marketplace" has been coined to describe the business of selling false and misleading information under the guise of traditional journalism. The discussion is led by Dr. Justin McBrayer, author of the book, Beyond Fake News: Finding Truth in a World of Misinformation. During the presentation, McBrayer discusses why we have a fake news problem, and why the fake news marketplace is so dangerous. He mentions possible solutions, believing, as he says, “As a society, there’s a lot we can do to clean up our informational environment and limit the damage of fake news.” McBrayer is a Professor of Philosophy, and an Associate Dean/Division Coordinator at Fort Lewis College in Durango. He presents and publishes widely in such journals as International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, Religious Studies, and Philosophical Studies, and at conferences and programs around the world. He is the past chair of the Mountain-Pacific regional committee of the Society of Christian Philosophers and is an ad-hoc reviewer for many journals.
